Vancouver on Tap

VANCOUVER ON TAP CANTEEN IDEAS:

I want to make our canteen a) cool and wanted and b) very fluid and natural looking. I initally thought to stick to just a drop shaped canteen as it very simple clean and very iconic....which would work well for making a name for Vancouver on Tap. The following images are some cool concepts for bottles that are very interesting. I love the simplicity of each and that fact that each is follows closely to either the form of the hand or the form of water. You want to touch all of these. It's a sensory experience as well as taste.

CREATIVE RATIONALE:

What's the product?:
Vancouver City Tap Water

Associated emotions with Tap Water:
I would say fear would be #1, as most city dwellers are so used to avoiding tap water these days because of contamination in the past.

Target Market:
Young active people aged 20-35

Winning Propositions/Attributes that set this product apart:
It costs nothing and it good for you. It's a necessity of life.....you must drink some or else you'll die!!!!! Tap water also avoids the need for millions and millions of plastic bottles in the landfill. Plus, since bottled water companies can claim whatever they want, you are safeer drinking city regulated water.

Key Challenges/Barriers to Buying in:
The fear that tap water is contaminated.

Project Goals:
The make Vancouver Tap Water sexy and cool and erase the fear from people's minds that it is contaminated.

Media. What will be seen?
: Our campaign will hit the following areas: guerilla campaigns (outdoors), new water fountains, fashionable and reusable water bottles as well as some advertisements.

Great Spatial Design - for your walls

Not only can you go rock climbing in your living room and get some exercise......you'll look good doing it. Well, at least your background will be nice to look at. Much nicer than a slab of rock.

Great Spatial Design - for people

For anyone who has ever wanted to live in a tree. This would possibly be the closest thing.......but I’m sure far fewer bugs.

This is a rendering for a new building that could be potentially going up. The archietect’s main focus was to bring people back to nature. Mission accomplished. This looks more like an Amazonian waterfall than an apartment building. It’s a spectacular marriage of form and function.

Great Spatial Design - for Fishies

I want to live here! I’m sure this is fun for the fishies too. Instead of thinking of just a plain old box for the fishes to swim in, this designer has now made a 3D playground for the fish. As well, it’s much nicer than those hamster playgrounds you see for hamsters. This is something I’m sure a lot of people would be proud to display with or without fish.

Banana is Fuel Commercial

Another way to implement and saturate our BANANA iS FUEL message to our audience is commercials. We would air these during prime kids and teens show slots.

Ive storyboarded how I want our commercial to flow. The mood and theme would follow closely to our posters and our website.

Banana is Fuel Poster Campaign

Another implementation of our campaign would be a series of posters that we could coat the city with to get some intrique going about our campaign and get people wanting to know more (a la The GameKillers, go to website to find out more and figure it out).

Initial Sketches:

Implementation of Idea to Actual Artwork:

Banana is Fuel Website

Eugene is working on the front end and gaming portion of the website. I am working on the concept of a blog on our website that would included training tips from pro athletes as well as teen athletes. Is would be an open discussion area in which kids and teens could discuss athleticism and get tips from their favorite stars.

Here are some sketches on how to implement that:

Banana is Fuel Logo

So from the basic concept of BANANA IS FUEL we have distilled down to the basic visual of a banana as a battery. This way, user and athletes can pick up and banana visually and gain energy. This also gives the audience an immediate visual cue to the main concept that BANANA IS FUEL.

I wanted a very simple graphic logo that could be spanned across different media and could be easily implemented on any media. Also it was important that is be easily remembered and identified as our campaigns logo.

We also created a short and to the point tagline that can be shown with the logo at all times.

Banana is Fuel Campaign

Eugene and Kellys Campaign Strategy

Eugene and I discussed what we wanted for our Campaign Strategy:

Campaign options
1. Image of recharging/refueling from a banana.
2. Shock & Awe, Crash & Burn
3. anything else that may develop

I am following these areas of the campaign
1. Preliminary logo
2. Posters
3. Commercial
4. Blog

Eugene is following these areas of the campaign
1. Web intro
2. Online game (associated with some sort of theme)The concept behind the whole campaign is BANANA IS FUEL

Banana Concept Implementation

Well Eugene and I have finally finalized our concept. Our main concept is the banana as fuel/energy. Now is we have to distill that a bit further and find a way to represent that concept visually and apply the visual theme throughout the campaign.

CONCEPTS

CONCEPT #1

Banana Blog
Create a banana character that teens can relate to. A banana that has a personality and his own daily life struggles at school etc. This banana (lets call him Fred) has a blog with tons of cool stuff for kids to explore plus it also tells kids about his life, historically and whats going on now. This would create a story around the banana that kids might get into. Freds favorite games like Grand Theft Banana plus he has a band so some of his videos. Rather than tell kids heres why to eat healthy, it will be more about learning about Fred and his life and in turn kids will learn about the banana. There would be places to chat with Fred, share ideas, comment on his postings and send Bananagrams to your friends.

CONCEPT #2

Banana Art Movement
The idea behind this is to create awareness about bananas by creating a new media site that invites artists and kids from around the world to submit their art and packaging ideas to THE BANANA COUNCIL is hopes of it being picked. The site would be art driven. Showing new packaging for bananas from guest artists as well as downloadable stickers to put on your banana and personalize it. The goal would be to get kids looking and engaged in the art and artists with the whole concept behind all the artistic creation being bananas. This gets kids not only thinking about bananas but also helps them think more creatively and gives them a chance to design their own creations before eating them.

CONCEPT #3

Banana....Get them before they're gone
The idea behind this is to emphasize the fact that the bananas we know and love will be gone in 20 years. Get awareness of this fact and get kids to use them while they are here.

CONCEPT #4

What Do You Do With Your Peel
The idea behind this is to get kids to upload videos and images of how they reuse the banana peel. The ideas could be endless. Have an interactive community and a social networking site that is based on usage for banana peels.

TARGET MARKET RESEARCH

TARET MARKET:
Teens and tweens (11-18)

I've done some questionnaires and given them to a few different teens and tweens 8 all together) and basicially through that I have found that the majority of the websites they like and they visit on a regular basis are Facebook, Hotmail and video games sites. So I think it's safe to draw the conclusion that teens and tweens are interested in new media that can a) entertain them and b) keep them connected to their peers.

HERE'S THE QUESTIONAIRE:

1. What is your age:

2. How often do you use the internet?
3. Favorite music and/or band right now?
4. Favorite movie right now?

5. Favorite thing to do on the weekend?

6. Which 3 websites do you visit most often and why?

7. Do you follow any blogs, if so, which ones?

8. Do you feel the need to eat healthy? And why or why not?
9. Have you been informed about healthy eating and if so, who taught you the most about it?
10. What’s your favorite snack?

11. Do the majority of the kids in your school eat healthy or unhealthy?

12. If you had a choice between a banana, an apple, an orange or any kind of candy, which would you pick and why?

13. What comes to mind when you think about bananas?

14. How many computers are in your home?

15. Do you have a cell phone?

Characteristics of Target Market:

-This group has a strong interest in what their friends are doing and what friends think is cool

-This group doesn't have a lot of spending money but does have time
-This group is very technologically saavy

-All surveyed have at least one computer in the house and access to a cell phone
-Most don't have an interest in eating healthy even though they have been informed about healthy eating

-Fav websites: Facebook, Hotmail and video games sites.

COMPETITION:
All other food and candy

COMPETITION RESEARCH:

The competiton for other fruits is pretty much nothing. From my research, the only new media I could find were poorly designed fact sites that only offer textbook info and that is all. The main competition comes from Candy. There is a big market for candy and candy manufacturers have websites that are not only engaging but well designed. Most of the sites are bright and vibrant to match their packaging and get peoples attention.

Heres is an apple site I found. Nothing to look at and searching through here looks like it would be tourturous.

Heres the Cadbury sites for their chocolates. Its branded well and it targeted not only to kids but parents as well. They have games for kids, cards to send and lots of interactivity.

BANANA RESEARCH:

Besides the fact that bananas are healthy, which we all know, the most important fact I found while researched THE BANANA is that in 20 years or so, the bananas that we know and love will be gone. The species we know cannot be sustained so they will have to be replaced with another variety of banana in the future. One that wont taste exactly the same and will most likely have seeds. This may be a key to the selling point of bananas.....get them while you can.

BANANA PROJECT INITIAL CONCEPTS AND IDEAS

Initial Assumptions about Bananas:
-silly
-monkey
-yellow
-green
-baby food
-hands involved
-peeling
-tropical
-cereal
-bruising
-mushy
-sweet
-healthy

-A cool bananas's first day at school (with our competition being the apple-geeky and candy-pimple ridden)
-Color based application (yellows) to reinforce the fruit
-Repackage (brand on banana's skin)
-Zoom in close ups of a banana (yellow party) and a hamburger (fat kids playing video games)
-Evolution of man from monkey and why we need bananas
-Junk food diet vs. a healthy diet and show the effects
-Banana running in a track and field game and wins cause he's so full of goodness!

CREATIVE BRIEF FOR BANANA PROJECT

PROBLEM:
Not enough teens are eating fruits (bananas, apples, oranges) these days. They're eating too much candy.

SOLUTION:
Get kids to eat more fruits (specifically the great banana). Create a heightened experience to sell the banana (through EMOTION, FUNCTION = VALUE) using New Media as the vehicle.

REQUIREMENTS:
Choose 1 of 3 different fruits that are all competing to be eaten (Ours is the banana)
· List all the advantages/disadvantages
· Consider all other fruits competition
· Students will work in groups of 2: get one fruit

New Media Goals:
· Create a New Media driven campaign that will make the banana irresistable to the target demographic (cool, tasty, awesome). Can your experience prove to be valuable and memorable.
· You have all the tools of New Media at your disposal (Web, Video, Audio, Viral Marketing) to create this fantastic, innovative experience.
· Remember the definition of New Media
· The sky is the limit. You have no budget. We will celebrate innovation, the cool and the fantastic! You have the best programmers at your disposal.

TARGET MARKET:
· Tweens and Teens
- Research strategies:
· What are kids into these days? How can we connect with them?

FINAL DELIVERABLES:
October 2:
- Get in your pairs and develop a strategy for the next 2 weeks
- Write down everything you know about this topic
- Immediately brainstorm 3-6 assumptions/ideas/ways of tackling/selling this problem
- After class, post to the blog

October 9:
- Research and validate your ideas that you generated in class
- Develop another 3 solid ideas/concepts
- Have all your research and develop posted on the blog before class (otherwise late)
- Class at my place next week (so we can use computers)
- Have multiple ideas (IN SKETCH FORM) generated and ready to present in class (NARRATIVE)
- Either on the process template or on screen (present a suitable narrative)

October 16th:
- Have all your developments posted on the blog before class
- Present refined visuals of your concept (to be determined with instructor)
- Hand in your process books

The Soultion for Pirates

So basically and very shortly put my problem that I found in the news that needs to be solved is pirates.

Apple Picking Machine - Part Deux

Problem: Picking apples manually is time consuming and labour intensive

Goals & Objectives: To create a machine that takes all the manual labour and time out of picking apples

Ideas/Solutions:
* Must be tall enough to pick ALL the apples
* Take down as many apples as possible in one time
* Do not overbruise
* Must be fast

Here are my sketches and initial ideas:

And here are my final drawings for the apple picker:

This design is basically derived from the concept of a cherry picker. Tried and true but works for picking things at tall heights and could just be modified for apple trees.

It would speed up apple picking time by letting workers stay on the ground and not have to climb up and down a ladder and since it's machine driven and user operated, the manual labour of apple picking has gone down considerably.

This concept is basically a long arm that could grab the top of the tree and shake all the apples off. The net below would secure all fallen apples.

Again, this would speed up apple picking time by letting workers stay on the ground and not have to climb up and down a ladder and since it's machine driven and user operated, the manual labour of apple picking has gone down considerably.

This design is a network of ladders and levels that would be designed and created all through the orchard. Workers are not forced to go back up and down the ladder and all the tree can be picked in one go.

Apple Picking Machine Ideas

Well I have started many a sketch for my apple picking machine. I was having a bit of trouble with one because I had a particular look in mind.....I knew I kinda wanted it to look something like the breakfast making contraption from Pee Wees Big Adventure. Kind of homemade, reconstituted items all working together to accomplish one simple task (like making breakfast...or....picking apples). I stumbled upon 2 illustrators that basically illustrate mainly only these contraptions. They have spent days and days (maybe) thinking through the processes of what their design needed to accomplish and built something that not only solves the original "problem" but do it with the utmost creativity.

Escape to Dali

I've found a place I need to visit before I die. The pictures alone are awe inspiring. Las Posas de Edward James is a huge concrete surrealistic palace on the mountainside of Xilitla, Mexico. It was created by Edward James, an English eccentric, and lover of Dali and others of the surrealist movement. Even Dali was known to comment on Edward and his behaviour. This structure has been in decay since 1984, when Edward James passed away. Which I think is a shame.....well at least we have pictures.

Yarrrrrr!!!!

Well seriously still have pirates??? Seriously?? Apparently they are alive and well. I never knew. I think I want to be a pirate but since this socially kinda a "bad job", maybe I'll hold off....for now. So with that in mind.....read this story about pirates........I'm sure their are very easy ways to get rid of pirates for good. We're not dealing with muskets and cannons anymore c'mon.

The Age of Duck and Cover

So much of 50's design inspires me. It's graphic illustrations and saturated hues. So many different artists during that time with so much talent. Graphic designers in that time were artists. They were illustrators who hand drewn their ads....and typographers that rendered only type in hand.

Here's one piece of 50's design I stumbled upon that's simple, graphic and impactful.
I'll add more at a later date.

Mary, Mary why you buggin?

Oh, this is just so very pretty.....and all in just spray paint.

Here are a few of my favorite things......

Here are a few of my favorite things......

To narrow down my 2 favorite websites was hard. I enjoy several websites on a more than regular basis but I narrowed down my choices based on 2 specific parameters. The websites had to be ones that I visit either twice a week or more and also be a constant source of inspiration and ideas.
Boing Boing is great for not only creative inspiration but also just other cool stuff you can (and probably should) learn. I find it more interesting to spend 2 hours here than watching TV. Feels like you've actually accomplished something.

Veer is a stock image site. Rather pricey but they have an extraordinary amount of extremely creative illustration and photography. A lot of work that I haven't seen on any other sites. If I've ever been stuck on one idea, this site gets all sorts of ideas flowing through my head. It's hard to write them down fast enough after going here.

Amautalab is a super fun site from a design company in South America. Not only is this site well designed but it FULL of landscapes to explore and play. It took me a few a times playing there to find them all. After you're done playing there, you can spend a lot of time exploring their portoflio which is pretty impressive.
